Definitions -
People:
1. Sensei: teachers, instructors - in kendo usually reserved for
someone at 3rd Dan and up.
2. Senpai: senior
3. Kouhai (Kohai): junior
4. Kenshi: a practitioner of kendo, fencer
5. Kendoka: a practioner of kendo, fencer
6. Senshu: player, competitor
7. Shinpan: referee
8. Shinpanin: referee
Cultural note: the relationship between senior and junior is one aspect of kendo that establishes
not only a hierarchy, but also a support structure. A 6th Dan and a 7th Dan will use these terms
and relationships just as a beginner and ranking person might.
Equipment:
1. Keikogi: kendo uniform (top)
2. Hakama: man’s formal divided skirt (kendo uniform bottom)
3. Bougu (Bogu): protector (general name for kendo equipment)
4. Men: face mask
